About ACT (Acceptance & Commitment Therapy)

ACT is a powerful form of behavioural therapy clinically proven to be successful with a range of psychological and emotional problems, including PTSD, depression, anxiety, addictions, eating disorders and OCD.

The aim of ACT is to help you live a RICH, FULL & MEANINGFUL life while ACCEPTING the PAIN that inevitably goes with it. The key theme of ACT is to ACCEPT what’s out of your control and COMMIT to ACTION that improves your life.

As the name implies, ACT is a very ACTion orientated therapy. Although it is a talking therapy, it is also a doing therapy. Clients actively learn new skills which help them improve their quality of life, which they learn in session and practice in their day to day life.

Life opens up when discomfort isn't something to run away from.

What Does ACT Therapy Involve?

The main elements to helping you create a rich, full and meaningful life are:

- BE PRESENT and enjoy the richness of your life.

- OPEN UP to experience your life to the full.

- DO WHAT MATTERS most to you.

BE PRESENT AND OPEN UP

To really enjoy the rich experience of life, we need to be able to handle painful thoughts and feelings when they show up, so they don’t have an impact and influence on us. When we’re able to engage fully in the present moment without painful thoughts and feelings having an influence, we’re able to concentrate much more, we have more awareness of ourselves and others, and this in turn brings richness and vitality to our life.

A key part of ACT is learning new skills in session and practicing them between sessions. We will experiment together and try different exercises to see which ones you find helpful and work for you.

At the beginning of each session we’ll talk about how you got on with your practice at home and explore anything that you found challenging. I’ll be there every step of the way and we’ll work together as a team. There are always options for adapting exercises, so we can be creative, and everything we do will be entirely optional. You always get to choose what we do in our sessions.

DO WHAT MATTERS
To understand what matters most to you, we’ll clarify what your values are; what’s really important and meaningful to you, deep in your heart. We’ll explore what you stand for in life and how you want to treat yourself, those you love and the world around you. Our values inspire us, motivate us, guide us, bring us fulfillment and give us meaning and purpose. So when we know and understand your values, we will use them to set goals and create an action plan for you to get you moving towards being the person you want to be and living the life you want to live.
